5. Finding free parking is difficult
Many people want to experience van life because they think it's a cheaper way to travel than renting a hotel. There is very little free space for overnight parking. Campgrounds all cost you between $ 10 and $ 40 per night. If you have more, you only need $ 20 for a $ 60 room. So if you spend too much on fuel, food, and shelter, that's not the goal you're headed for. If there is a place that allows you to park all night, it is Walmart, but this is not a very attractive place.
The advantage you can see here is that Walmart has security cameras and lights. However, you may not be comfortable because of the combination of the noise coming from the crowd of shoppers. Some apps can help you find free parking, but not many places have it. If you go to California, you can find lots of free parking because people here have adopted that lifestyle. However, if you travel to the Midwest, you may have to drive over 100 miles to find safe parking.
