8. Millard House
In 1923, the Millard House was built in Pasadena, California as the first of the four "weaving blocks" residences by Frank Lloyd Wright. He started this project after completing Hollyhock House and Imperial Hotel. To get out of his Prairie House Style, Wright put more his vision on concrete blocks. He aimed to take a simple, cheap material and turn it into something beautiful.
Using textured blocks in neutral tones, Wright wanted the house to blend in with the surrounding trees and hillsides. At the time, the look and design of Millard House were not well received by other architects, but Wright was still very proud of his work. In the decades after the construction of Millard House, it became widely known as one of the classics of the 20th century.
