26. Cedar Rock

This home is widely known as the Lowell Walter House and is in Cedar Rock State Park in Iowa. It was initially designed in 1948 by Wright as the summer home for Iowa businessman Lowell Walter and his family in Des Moines. Cedar Rock has the tadpole shape characteristic of Usonian homes, which features "head" living and dining spaces and "tail" bedrooms.

With a two-story boathouse and an outdoor fireplace, Wright built the home on 11 acres. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls offer a gorgeous view of the valley surrounding the home. The living spaces are still packed with natural light in the house center thanks to many skylights and a clerestory. The Lowell Walter House is preserved and available to the public for tours by the Friends of Cedar Rock.
