19. Safety comes first
During a mission to evacuate residents during Hurricane Floyd in Eastern NC, a prominent family farmer refused to evacuate his home. Floodwaters rose rapidly, and the police gave up, changing his mind. I drove my truck right into his yard and asked him to dress my kid up in something bright orange or yellow. He asked me why and I said, "Body rehab should be able to distinguish them from all the dead pigs floating around." He told me I was lost. But five minutes later, he got the whole family in the car, and they were out."
Many people are used to surviving storms. They don't take flood warnings seriously. They need a big event like this to keep themselves and their loved ones safe when a flood warning passes through your area.
