4. Feel Good Spiritually

For thousands of years, architects and planners around the world have been spiritually considerate in their decision-making. Whether you realize it or not, the spiritual focus is often when you are able to step into space and feel instantly calm. The Wabi-sabi design in Japan is an example of that. The same goes for churches in Europe. Its design is so large that it makes you feel small, like a grain of sand in a large universe. Regardless of which belief system you apply to, ask yourself how mentally and emotionally you felt when you entered your home. If you feel negative and claustrophobic, that could be a sign that you need to have spiritual cleansing in your space.

I don't recommend taking this advice literally. For example, my mother was Catholic, and she set up a temple to worship the Virgin Mary in one of her living rooms. This temple is complete with statues, tapestries, and candles. While that may make her feel happy and emotional, it can make others feel uncomfortable as the statues gaze at them while they're trying to watch TV. There are many ways to create a comfortable space for your soul without having to choose a specific religion. What is more important is that you feel at peace in your space.
