Although particular poppies, such as the notorious Opium Poppy, Papaver somniferum, are not hardy in the United States, others, such as the Icelandic Poppy, can survive even in the harshest of conditions. As its name suggests, the Icelandic Poppy cannot withstand heat, so gardeners in climates with an extensive range of temperatures, such as the United States, should avoid it.
As the name implies, Midwest gardeners should avoid this variety because it is susceptible to scorching. Gardeners in more temperate climates, on the other hand, will be rewarded with delicate, papery flowers on comically long, prickly stems.
