Following Brandon's seemingly heartless departure to pursue higher education, Taylor, left in emotional turmoil, collaborated with Liz Rose to write "Tim McGraw" for her self-titled debut studio album. She clarified, "The inspiration behind this song was a guy I was in a relationship with, who was on the brink of heading off to college. I reflected on everything I knew would trigger memories of me in his mind."
In an interview with USA Today in 2006, Taylor disclosed that Brandon had purchased her first album and "really enjoyed it, which is quite endearing. However, his current girlfriend didn't seem too thrilled about it."
