A Spiritual Ascent

A truly extraordinary natural formation is the Katskhi Pillar, located in the western part of Georgia. Back in the 9th or 10th century, a group of monks constructed a church at the pinnacle of this limestone monolith. Reaching this sacred site has always been a formidable challenge.

Nevertheless, people have ascended the pillar for centuries to offer their prayers. Twice a week, followers supply Monk Maxime with food and provisions via a 131-foot ladder.
