15. The Hands of Fate Intervened
The universe revealed that FueGodieGo's fiancée was cheating through a series of coincidences. "The incident occurred in the early 1990s. Meg, my fiancée, had one semester of college left before starting an internship in Belgium. I stayed at home because I was supposed to set up our residence. She'd move in when she returned that summer, and we'd select a date for our wedding. Meg kept in touch with me by phone and letters while she was in Europe. I moved into a brownstone and purchased furniture, among other things. Claire, a childhood neighbor, was a waiter there, much to my surprise. Since high school, we hadn't seen each other. Claire was in a relationship with a man named Ben.
"I stopped in for a cup of coffee a few days later, and Claire seemed distressed. She informed me that the day before, she had received a call from her Aunt Sue. Aunt Sue traveled through Europe when she came into Claire's fiancée, Ben, traveling with a female friend named Meg in a hotel lobby. When Claire called Ben, he confessed that he had seen Meg all along. I dialed my fiancée's number and asked her outright if she was dating Ben. I didn't even say how I found out about it. She acted as if I was mad at first. But, in the end, he admitted it. To this day, I marvel at the sheer number of completely random coincidences that went into Meg and Ben. After they married, he cheated on her, and they divorced. The universe operates in unique and mysterious ways.
