Ursula Was Originally Ariel's Aunt
In the 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, one of Disney's most popular villains is the sea witch Ursula. In the film, Ursula offers Ariel a way to turn into a human to fall in love with Prince Eric. Initially, Ursula was supposed to be King Triton's sister, making her Ariel's aunt.
This discarded backstory adds depth to Ursula's character, showcasing Disney's commitment to creating multifaceted and nuanced villains. Even though Disney removed the familial connection, Ursula remains a memorable antagonist in Disney's villainous pantheon.
