I was assigned to an orthopedic rotation on the floor of a large hospital in a rural location of Southern California. During my rounds, I noticed a patient getting out of bed and walking around the floor after a knee replacement. She was holding a cane in her hand, which she was wielding like a rifle by a soldier. I inquired as to what she was doing and what the club was for. She responded that she thought the cane was for pushing people out of her way since she was now "handicapped," not for assisting her in walking on her post-op knee.
