With low ceilings and damp walls, everyday living and personal hygiene were almost impossible for Elisabeth and her children. There was no circumstance under which this could have been humane treatment.
The police also found no evidence of the lock traps and poison that Elisabeth had told them Josef had warned her about. They discovered it was all just another form of mental torture to control Elisabeth and stop her and her kids from escaping.
