A Bid for Freedom
Just after her 15th birthday, Elisabeth dropped out of school. Instead of giving up on education altogether, Elisabeth enrolled in a waitressing course, which took place away from home. It provided welcome relief from the difficult home life she never told anyone about.
In 1983, when she was 17 years old, Elisabeth ran away from home with a friend from work and got as far as nearby Vienna when they were found by the police three weeks later and forced to return to Amstetten.
