Working Out Who Pays Is Easy
Food holds significant cultural importance in Thai culture, and determining who pays the bill is quite straightforward. When dining with a group of people of the same status and age, the bill is usually split evenly among all members.
However, if there is an age or wealth disparity within the group, it is customary for the older or wealthier person to take the responsibility of paying the bill. In Thai culture, it would be seen as disrespectful if someone younger or less affluent attempted to pay, as it could be interpreted as undermining the status of the person expected to handle the bill. The senior or wealthier member paying is seen as a gesture of respect and is widely accepted and appreciated in Thai social settings.
