Conjoined Facts
Tragically, approximately 40 to 60 percent of conjoined twins are stillborn at birth, and 35 percent do not survive beyond their first 24 hours. Conjoined twins are consistent with the same gender, and curiously, females tend to have a significantly higher survival rate.
Among the earliest documented cases of conjoined twins is one that dates back to the year 1100 in Biddenton, County of Kent, England. The twins, Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst, were born conjoined and remarkably lived to age 34.
