Tricking the Inventor of the Brazen Bull

Perilaus of Athens, the inventor of the Brazen Bull, faced a gruesome fate. The Brazen Bull was a hollow statue, and when a person entered it, a fire would be lit beneath, effectively burning them to death.

Perilaus was punished for his invention by Phalaris, the ruler of ancient Greece. He was asked to demonstrate the effectiveness of his creation. Reluctantly, he entered the bull's interior, but he was saved before he could be burnt to death. However, his reprieve was short-lived, as he was later thrown off a cliff.
