Generous Wages for Ancient Greeks
Compared to other civilizations, ancient Greeks enjoyed relatively high monthly salaries. During their economic peak in the 4th and 5th centuries B.C.E., ancient Greece ranked as the world's most economically developed nation.
This economic prosperity was reflected in the incomes of ordinary citizens. On average, a Greek citizen earned 12 kilograms of wheat per month, nearly four times more than the average Roman, who earned 3.75 kilograms of wheat in the same period.
