Before Spartans, There Was the Legendary Sacred Band of Thebes
Spartans are renowned for their unmatched courage, endurance, and discipline. The tale of the 300 Spartans, immortalized in popular culture by the movie of the same name, is based on the Battle of Thermopylae.
However, the Sacred Band of Thebes overcame the seemingly invincible Spartans. Comprising 150 men, all of whom were lovers, this elite force brought an end to Spartan dominance. The Sacred Band rose to prominence with triumph at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 B.C.
