23. Thatch Roofs
One of the most iconic characteristics of British village houses is thatched roofs. You never see this in the US, there might be Americans not having an idea of what it is. Indeed, it is an ancient technique of using a straw to make roofing material. Compare to slate roofing tiles, you could not think that straw would be perfect. But the reality is that it works very well for insulation, and it extends for 40 to 50 years. And modern roofs only persist 20 years. Therefore, it is not practical to recommend placing your home in the United States. However, it is still utterly symbolic of the appearance of an English house. What's even better is that roofing manufacturers will sometimes add accents like designs or small animals on top of the roof.
