Years ago, before the invention of the phone, people would write to each other to contact. So they need a writing desk in their home. Back then, people used to be small, and they didn't sit at their desks all day, so you'll find that they might have drawers on their side and a tiny area to put your feet. Today, we no longer write, but you may need a desk to work on your laptop. Some people simply use their kitchen table.
