Ed is the other half of the Irene-and-Ed couple who agrees to Kate's offer of two first-class plane tickets and some of her belongings to Dallas. Initially, Ed wasn't keen on swapping tickets, which would delay their trip home by a week. However, after some persuasion from Kate, he relents and gives up his seat in exchange for Kate's offer.
After that, Kate boards the plane to Dallas, and we never see Irene and Ed again. Interestingly, this couple also appeared in "Dennis the Menace" as a couple when George received the Garden of the Month plaque.
