John Hurt / Elephant Man
In the 1980s, John Hurt tackled the challenging role of John Merrick in the movie "Elephant Man." The transformation required for this role was incredibly daunting, as Hurt had to wear numerous layers of prosthetics. The weight and complexity of the makeup were so intense that it figuratively made his head spin. In his own words, Hurt remarked, "I think they finally managed to make me hate acting."
The film itself tells the heart-wrenching story of John Merrick, a man born with severe deformities in the 1800s. Sadly, during that time, society was not accepting of individuals with such conditions, and Merrick was treated as a sideshow attraction for most of his life. The extensive makeup and Hurt's dedication to the role were crucial in conveying this historical figure's profound struggles and emotions.
