The Cuban Gar: Manjuari Fish
The Cuban gar (Atractosteus tristoechus) belongs to the Lepisosteidae family and is exclusive to Cuba. This tropical freshwater species is also found in brackish water. It is alternatively known as the manual and inhabits western Cuban rivers and lakes and the Isla de la Juventud.
While the flesh of this fish is safe for consumption, its eggs are toxic. The Cuban gar spawns seasonally in the floodplains of major rivers. Although the fish is edible, many people consider it unpalatable due to its eggs' toxicity.
