Pico Turquino: Cuba's Highest Peak

Pico Turquino stands as the tallest mountain in Cuba, located within the Sierra Maestra mountain range in Guamá, Santiago de Cuba Province, in the island's southeastern part. It was this peak that Fidel Castro and his rebel forces reached during their insurrection in 1957.

Given its status as Cuba's highest mountain, Pico Turquino held immense symbolic significance for the rebels. This peak is situated within the Pico Turquino National Park, and access to this densely forested and remote area is facilitated through the small village of Santo Domingo.
