Exploring the Cauto River
The Cauto River, the longest river in the Granma and Santiago de Cuba provinces in eastern Cuba, winds its way for 230 miles (370 kilometers) from its source in the Sierra Maestra's western slopes through basaltic plains until it reaches the Golfo de Guacanayabo, making it the region's longest river.
Its headwaters include the Salado, Bayamo, and Contramaestre rivers, and it offers navigable stretches covering about 70 miles. Various crops such as rice, sugar beets, tobacco, and cattle are cultivated along its banks.
