Ballet Thrives in Cuba
Traditionally, the dance scene in Cuba has centered on salsa, son, and rumba. However, Cuba has earned its reputation as a major global hub for ballet.
The rise of ballet in Cuba can be traced back to 1948 when the renowned ballerina Alicia Alonso founded the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. This institution has become one of the world's most esteemed dance companies. Notably, Fidel Castro and his revolutionary movement supported the company in 1959, with Alonso backing his cause.
