The Abolition of Slavery in 1886
The Cuban slave trade persisted until 1867, long after it had ended in other parts of the Atlantic world. Owning individuals as chattel enslaved people remained legally permissible until 1880.
Systematic abolition of slavery took place in 1886 when a Spanish royal decree abolished slavery in Cuba, making it one of the few nations in the Western Hemisphere to do so.
