Christopher Columbus's Exploration
Before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492, the island was inhabited by diverse Amerindian cultures. Following his expedition, Spain asserted control over Cuba and established Spanish governors in Havana.
Administrators in Cuba were overseen by the Viceroy of New Spain and local authorities in Hispaniola, which is now the Dominican Republic.
