Cuba's Remarkable Literacy

Cuba boasts one of the world's highest literacy rates, with an astonishing 99% of its population considered literate.

In 1961, Fidel Castro's Cuban government declared it the "Year of Education" and dispatched "literacy brigades" to rural areas. These brigades not only built schools and trained new educators but also taught the majority of illiterate peasants to read and write. According to UNESCO, Cubans aged 15 and above have achieved a literacy rate of 99%.
