John Lennon's Evolving Status
Twenty years after the death of John Lennon, Fidel Castro reversed his stance, no longer banning Lennon's music but honoring him as a hero. In the newly inaugurated John Lennon Park, Castro unveiled a striking bronze statue of the legendary musician.
During the 1960s and 1970s, it is no surprise that Communist Cuba outlawed John Lennon and the songs of The Beatles. Cuban authorities perceived this music as "ideological diversions" and a manifestation of "decadent American influence" during the revolutionary era.
