Certain life events, such as losing a family member, can be profoundly distressing and require time away from work. Most compassionate managers would offer their support and grant the necessary time off, even if they required proof of the situation.

In this case, the manager's response was deeply insensitive, and even worse, they threatened to terminate the employee for missing work due to a family bereavement. Forcing employees to apologize to their coworkers for such a personal and heart-wrenching situation appears to be abusing power.
