The Value of Friendship
When going on a first date, it's normal to want to impress that person. You shouldn't lie about your life and your means, but you don't want them to know about your messy studio apartment or broken-down car right off the bat.
The bad friend is clearly the one borrowing the car, since he feels he has a right to keep it however long he wants after the owner clearly told him no. We doubt he ever got to borrow the car after this incident.
