Pocahontas' Sidekick Was Almost a Turkey
For the setting of Pocahontas in Virginia, animators considered including a turkey. Initially, Redfeather the turkey was planned as the princess's sidekick.
After the actor's passing, Redfeather was replaced by Meeko, a raccoon. Meeko's agility and humor, especially with Governor Ratcliffe's pug, made him a great replacement.
