U.S. Government Apologizes for Hawaiian Monarchy Overthrow

On January 16, 1893, U.S. Marines landed in Hawaii following a successful coup d'état orchestrated by foreign interests. The last Hawaiian monarch, Queen Liliʻuokalani, peacefully surrendered her throne to avert needless violence.

The U.S. government formally apologized for its role in this coup a century later. This apology prompted a movement advocating for the restoration of Hawaii's sovereignty. Nonetheless, Hawaii's official status remains unchanged and it continues to be a part of the United States.
