Hawaii Awaits the Arrival of Another Island

Due to ongoing volcanic activity, the Hawaiian island chain anticipates the addition of a new member. This impending island, essentially a submerged volcano, already bears the name Lōʻihi.

Situated approximately 35 miles south of the island of Hawaii, Lōʻihi is projected to emerge above sea level in roughly 100,000 years. Currently, its summit is estimated to lie 3,000 feet below sea level. There remains a possibility that this new island might merge with the Big Island, though only time will unveil its fate.
