Another Island Is Forming in Hawaii
Due to periodic volcanic eruptions beneath the ocean's surface, a new island called Loihi is gradually forming. It will emerge above the sea's surface when its summit reaches that level. This process is expected to take several millennia. When it happens, the Big Island will become Hawaii's youngest island.
Loihi is approximately 20 miles off the south coast of the Big Island.
