Hawaii Is the Only State in the U.S. to Honor a King

While the United States prides itself on its democratic principles and historic fight for independence from British rule, Hawaii pays homage to a king with King Kamehameha Day. King Kamehameha, who unified the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1800s, holds a special place in Hawaiian history.

Hawaiians believe that King Kamehameha's birth fulfilled a traditional prophecy, foretelling the arrival of a male who would conquer all other chiefs to become the greatest ruler in Hawaii.
