Hawaii's Skies Are Filled With Vog, Not Smog
Hawaii's skies are typically pristine, free from the usual urban smog. However, residents occasionally contend with "vog," a term used to describe volcanic haze emanating from the ongoing eruptions of Kilauea volcano on the Big Island since 1983.
Vog can sometimes drift to other islands, though it is not considered dangerous. Nevertheless, it can be uncomfortable for individuals with asthma or respiratory issues. On Maui, voggy skies contribute to stunning sunsets and moonrises, magnifying the appearance of the sun and moon, often giving them a vivid orange hue.
