Mount Haleakala in Maui, Hawaii: The World's Largest Dormant Volcano
Mount Haleakala is an imposing presence in Maui, standing at 10,023 feet, with a summit crater measuring 7.5 by 2.5 miles. Remarkably, most of this volcano is submerged beneath sea level, giving it a total elevation of approximately 30,000 feet from the seafloor.
Although this massive volcano, responsible for shaping 75% of Maui, is considered dormant, it is not entirely inactive. The last known eruption occurred in the early 1800s.
