By November 2006, Richards and Sheen's separation was legally finalized, but their turbulent relationship persisted even after the official divorce. A court order required Sheen to maintain a distance of 300 feet from his ex-wife and their daughters, except during supervised visits.
Despite their legal battles, they eventually reached a joint legal custody agreement, although Denise had initially sought sole custody, citing Sheen's "marital turmoil, sobriety issues, and criminal problems." In May 2010, Sheen voluntarily relinquished custody of their daughters to Richards.
