Adding a "wow" aspect is one way to make your small room look bigger. To keep your eyes occupied and looking around the room, you want to create an area with many colors and do what you can. Bold, vivid, and the way to go is generally a mix of colors.
For example, try to make an accent wall if your walls are all white and buy furniture that is different colors but goes together, such as a pink chair and a blue couch. Then you can get a bright rug and add other bits that carry other colors in.
