5. Water Infrequently but Deeply

Watering too regularly and too shallowly is a common mistake made by many new gardeners, whether they're watering indoor houseplants or outdoor lawns, gardens, and veggies. Plants will begin to expand their roots upwards to take advantage of the limited amounts of water when only given regular shallow waterings, resulting in weaker and less healthy plants.

You can rinse houseplants from the bottom to avoid this issue, but plants in the ground cannot; therefore, more prolonged, deeper waterings are required to guarantee good profound root growth. Only water once a week, but for a much more extended period, let the water seep deeper into the soil and promote downward root growth.
