The Ptolemaic Dynasty could have continued with any of Cleopatra's children, but things were changing quite rapidly in Egypt at the time, and her children would actually go on to rule other regions, to marry into royalty, or end up dead.
She had been prepared for the family line to continue, however, and Cleopatra did what would have been considered her duty in providing her country with a surviving heir (several of them at the time of her death).
