As written on the show, Mary Cooper, played by another "Roseanne" alumna, Laurie Metcalf, Mary is almost the antithesis of her genius son Sheldon. Mary is an extremely religious Christian whose beliefs often directly contradict Sheldon's. Even so, she's a caring mother, always showing up to help Sheldon when he's most in need, usually when alerted by a concerned Leonard. Metcalf has been playing Mrs. Cooper since the character's introduction.
