Stretched Lips – Africa
Using discs to stretch the lower lips is a well-known cultural tradition among certain African tribes. While it might be considered unusual in the Western world, it holds deep cultural significance and is considered a sign of beauty within these communities.
In these tribes, young girls start stretching their lower lips using progressively larger discs. The size of the disc worn by a girl becomes a symbol of her status within society. The larger the disc, the higher her standing, and this can also influence the size of the dowry she receives when she gets married.
