Challenges with Substance Abuse

As we've previously mentioned, the Amish community generally adheres to the law and strives to maintain a peaceful and lawful way of life. However, like any community, there are individuals who engage in unlawful activities. In 1999, a notable incident occurred when two Amish men were arrested for their involvement in an illegal substance ring, during which they illicitly sold substances with a total value exceeding $100,000 over a span of six years.

This substance ring was primarily concentrated in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, which is home to a significant Amish population. What adds to the gravity of this situation is that these individuals were found to be selling these substances to Amish youth, a particularly troubling aspect that has raised concerns about the impact on their own community's well-being. Despite these isolated incidents, it's important to remember that they do not represent the entire Amish community, which, as a whole, strives to maintain a law-abiding and peaceful way of life.
