This idea is simple. Anyone with a spare bed can list it on the website. While most travelers prefer to have their room, some will always opt for the cheapest option, even if they can't have as much privacy as they might want. Some of the hostels listed on Airbnb have more than a dozen beds in each room.
When tourists stay overnight, the host makes money. The site pays directly to the servers through a direct deposit or a check by mail. So that extra bed - sometimes even just an air mattress, though more often than not - can turn into cash in the bank.
