American homes were wired with "knob and tube" electricity before the 1950s. Electricians have developed much simpler technologies over time, and no one uses knob and tube anymore. If you find older wiring in your home, it will need to be entirely removed. This will cost $8,000 in a 1,500 square foot home.

The list of future issues doesn't end there. There's an extended range of possible problems that might occur, with costs ranging from a few hundred dollars to $6,000. Due to the high cost of employing an electrician, some people opt to do the work themselves. Non-professionals are always rusty, and they don't understand how to neatly sort wires so that the following electrician understands how to repair the problem better. This will be a big hassle for the next owner, and it may be costly to fix.
