28. Poorly maintained homes

When you think of buying a home, drive around the surrounding streets to get a good sense of the neighborhood. It's a warning that the owner is no longer willing to care for his property if you see many homes that aren't well maintained. It could be overgrown grass, peeling paint, or crooked eaves.

This is often a warning sign that families in the surrounding area do not have any pride in their home. They may be about to foreclosure, which could eventually lead to an abandoned house on your street. This would lower the value of your home and could contribute to an increase in crime rates.
