32. Nemours Estate
The Nemours Mansion and Gardens was built between 1909 and 1910 by Alfred I du Pont, the industrial family du Pont, as a gift to his second wife. The house and the garden mimic the classic French castle and the French or Jardin à la française formal garden.
The house is packed with historic French paintings and decorations, and the estate is the United States' largest example of classic French gardens. Any notable works of art include some sculptures by European artists, a David Roentgen-designed Louis XVI cuckoo clock, and a coronation chair by King George VI.
